When Women Went to Sea

During the great age of sail in the 19th century, hundreds of women sailed with their seafaring husbands on voyages that took them around the globe. In their journeys they faced storms, pirates, shipwrecks, sea sicknesses, and loneliness far from home, family, and friends. Some had the experience of giving birth aboard ship. Until recently, the story of these amazing women has not been included in the general themes of maritime history.  This program will present stories of Cape Cod women who experienced adventures at sea in an environment that was usually considered the realm of men only.

Led by Jim Coogan, a Cape Cod historian. Raised in Brewster, Coogan has spent over fifty years cataloging and writing about the area's history. He is the author of thirteen books about the Cape -- five for children. A retired high school history teacher, Coogan sent almost twenty years as a regular columnist for the Cape Cod Times daily newspaper. He lives in Sandwich, Massachusetts.
